👁️ What is Pterygium?

A pterygium is a benign, wing-shaped growth of conjunctival tissue that extends onto the cornea. Often caused by excessive exposure to UV light, dust, wind, or dry climates, it can lead to:

  • Redness and irritation

  • A foreign body sensation

  • Cosmetic concerns

  • In advanced cases, visual distortion due to corneal involvement

🛠️ Surgical Approach: Pterygium Excision with Limbal Autografting

In this case, the patient presented with a progressive, symptomatic pterygium encroaching on the visual axis. We opted for the gold standard technique:

  • Pterygium Excision: The abnormal tissue was carefully excised from the ocular surface.

  • Conjunctival Limbal Autograft: A graft was taken from the patient's own superior conjunctiva, including limbal stem cells, and transplanted to the excised site. This promotes better healing and significantly reduces the recurrence rate.

The procedure was performed under local anesthesia and was completed smoothly with minimal intraoperative bleeding and excellent graft placement.

🔬 Why Limbal Autograft?

  • Lower recurrence rates compared to bare sclera technique

  • Promotes epithelial healing

  • Maintains the natural appearance of the eye

  • Ideal for recurrent or large pterygia

✅ Postoperative Recovery

The patient responded well postoperatively with:

  • Minimal discomfort and no signs of inflammation

  • A clear graft adherence

  • Excellent cosmetic outcome

  • No recurrence during follow-up

We provided post-op care with topical antibiotics and steroids, and the patient is on regular follow-up to ensure long-term success.
